The Shins’ debut release, Oh, Inverted World served as the band’s breakthrough record. The critically-acclaimed album performed moderately well on the mainstream chart, entering the Billboard 200. Although the album couldn’t move up to the chart’s top 100, Oh, Inverted World was able to attract a massive cult following. The 2001 effort featured their landmark track, “New Slang,” alongside “Caring is Creepy,” featured in the film Garden State. The lead character in the 2004 film referred to “New Slang” as the “song that will change your life.” Thus, leading to a significant increase in record sales. In 2021, the band released a reissue of the album, which was mastered by renowned music engineer Bob Ludwig, with the assistance of The Shins’ frontman James Mercer.
After the success of Oh, Inverted World, the band released four subsequent albums from 2003 to 2017. The third studio effort, Wincing the Night Away, earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. Featuring the hit singles “Phantom Limb,” “Turn on Me,” “Sea Legs,” and “Australia,” Wincing the Night Away debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200. The album also entered the charts in 12 other countries, including Australia, the U.K., and Canada.
