Gov’t Mule may be a highly-acclaimed, Grammy-nominated band, but this summer, they are dedicated fanboys who will cover several iconic songs from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Mule. The band released their live album, Dark Side of the Mule, in 2014. The record was a live recording of their iconic three-hour gig at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre. To celebrate Halloween, Gov’t Mule performed the entirety of The Dark Side of the Moon. This epic gig was talked about by fans and critics for years to come. This 2023, Gov’t Mule embarks on a full tribute tour, and only 12 lucky cities will be able to witness it.
Since the release of their debut album in 1995, Gov’t Mule has been a significant purveyor of blues/southern rock music. They gained a stellar reputation as a jam band thanks to the musical prowess of guitarist Warren Hayes and bassist Allen Woody. These two musicians, known for their incredible work with the Allman Brothers Band, pursued the band full-time in 1997. They released their second album, Dose, in 1998. The exemplary record contains tribute tracks, such as “Birth of the Mule” and “Theolonius Beck.” The songs paid homage to jazz legends Miles Daivs and Thelonius Monk. Dose also featured a cover of the 1930s hit “John The Revelator” and a Beatles cover of “She Said She Said.”
In 2001, Gov’t Mule’s albums began appearing on the Billboard 200. Their fourth studio album, The Deep End, Volume 1, entered the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number 128. The album spawned the single “Sco-Mule,” which was later nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 2003 Grammy Awards.
Ten years later, the band released their tenth studio effort, Shout! The album peaked at number 32 on the Billboard 200 and numbers 7 and 11 on the Top Tastemakers and Top Rock Albums charts. Shout! became their highest-charting album to date. Although Gov’t Mule is not really big on promoting themselves on the mainstream charts, the band has amassed a loyal following in the jam band scene. Their high-energy live sets and relentless touring have made them a crowd favorite among jam band fanatics.
