Before Destiny's Child reigned, there were The Supremes. In the 60s, the Motown sweethearts became R&B and soul legends thanks to Diana Ross and her light, silky voice. With her taking the lead, they garnered 12 top-one singles on Billboard and held the title of the best vocal band in American music history. When she decided to pursue a solo career, the world was enamored by her vocal prowess and pop sensibilities.
Diana started performing at 15, performing with the girl group The Primettes. They would later test their luck with Motown, and they sure were lucky when record executive Berry Goryd heard them. However, the record label did not accept them since they were only teenagers. This event did not detract the girl group, and they went to the recording studio every day offering second voice and background music contributions. During this time, Ross served as the make-up artist, hairstylist, and costume designer, apart from being the lead singer. Their persistence served well when in 1963, their song "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" reached the top 23 of Billboard Hot 100. They went on to dominate the pop charts after this, releasing consistent hits.
In 1970, Ross decided to go solo and released her debut self-titled album the same year. This album featured the song "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," which skyrocketed her career to stratospheric success. As demands for her songs rose, she released two more albums in the span of a year. "Everything Is Everything" (1970) and "Surrender" (1971) were huge hits. Her soulful song "I'm Still Waiting" from the second album brought her her first international success when it topped the UK charts. The 70s was also the start of Ross's acting career. She appeared in movies such as Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, and The Wiz.
During the 80s, she swept the world with records like "Diana," "Why Do Fools Fall In Love," "Swept Away," and many more. The decade ended with her achieving superstardom. In the 90s and 2000s, she would continue on to release eight more albums. Her most recent release is "Thank You" in 2021.
