Mountain Winery Amphitheater
One of the most unusual concert venues in the US, the beautiful architecture and historic nature of the Mountain Winery Amphitheatre provides a truly unique concert experience.
Imagine visiting a Roman-style amphitheater, that’s just minutes away from Silicon Valley! Fabulous scenery, clean air and a small friendly venue where you can see some of the biggest names in the world. That’s The Mountain Winery in Saratoga, northern California. Set in the beautiful Santa Cruz mountain region, you’ll be surrounded by State Parks and Open Space Preserves. Buzzfeed listed The Mountain Winery among America’s Coolest Concert Venues, which has hosted some of the greatest performers of our time.
Through the main gates, you’ll approach what was once Paul Masson’s Chateau up a long driveway. You’ll see a range of event spaces that host corporate retreats, conferences and weddings as well as concerts. The 2,500-seat amphitheater has a unique stage backdrop, built with the 12th-century Spanish doors of a collapsed cathedral.
Paul Masson was one of the founders of the Californian wine business, setting up his first “Vineyard in the Sky” in Saratoga in 1905. Sadly, the Great Earthquake in San Francisco took care of that, and Masson had to rebuild. By 1907, the second La Cresta chateau was up and running, and proved a great success until Prohibition again decimated the business. Although wine-making persisted here until 1952, it wasn’t until 1958 when the concert bowl was built that the venue regained its status.
The Mountain Winery’s famous Summer Concert Series began this year, thrilling crowds with its world-class music and awesome scenery. Performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, B.B. King and Diana Ross played here, as well as Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, Ringo Starr, Lyle Lovett, Heart and Al Green. The Mountain Winery’s intimate set-up allows 2,500 lucky concert-goers to enjoy an exceptional experience. Not only the audience, but the star performers also love to play in such a friendly and welcoming environment. You can book in to have dinner before the show, or sip cocktails in the garden and just soak up the atmosphere.
The Summer Concert Series continues to entertain crowds of enthusiastic fans. Go to the Events page to see what’s on at this beautiful venue Upcoming Events Schedule.
